Professional Experience:

  3. Strong pastoral skills including communication (listening, speaking, and writing)

The Diocese of Lansing is accepting applications for the position of Chancellor. The Chancellor assists the Bishop of Lansing in the three-fold ministry of teaching, governing, and sanctifying the people within our ten-county diocese.

Under the direction of the Bishop of Lansing as established by universal law (canon 482, §1), the Chancellor is responsible for gathering, arranging, and safeguarding the deeds, proceedings, and records of the diocese and the verification of the signature of the Bishop. The Chancellor is also the diocesan notary and secretary. The Chancellor is in charge of the diocesan seal. It is the responsibility of the Chancellor to work with the Diocesan Archivist in the safeguarding of all documents for the diocese, parishes, schools, and administrative offices in accordance with the retention scheduled defined by canon law and articulated by particular law.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Official Chancellor functions as established by universal law
2. Provide canonical counsel to the Bishop of Lansing, members of the Curia, pastors, principals and agency directors, as needed. Consults other canonists in the diocese or outside the diocese whenever necessary to resolve canonical issues.
3. Vet priests who will minister in the Diocese of Lansing according to the norms and procedures established by canon law and the Dallas Charter for the protection of youth and vulnerable adults.
4. Provide testimonials of suitability for priests/deacons who will be ministering outside of the Diocese of Lansing and celebrets for priests/deacons ministering out of the country.
5. Cooperate with immigration and Homeland Security officials regarding status of priests/deacons, i.e., to obtain or update visa status for service in pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Lansing.
6. Serve as the point of contact for all laicization requests and works in partnership with the Tribunal to process them.
7. Serve as Administrative Assistant to the Diocesan Bishop

Basic Qualifications:
1. A working knowledge of, and an absolute commitment to the mission of fostering the Catholic faith;
2. Excellent communications skills including written, verbal, public speaking and presentation skills;
3. Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills; must be a self-starter, organized, and a team player;
4. Be able to travel, and be available for evening and weekend work as necessary; have reliable transportation;
5. Be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
6. Have a proficiency in the use of computer technology including Microsoft Office products and related technology;
9. Flexibility in assessing needs and strategies and adapt appropriately in an administrative environment;
10 .Maintain the confidentiality of office on all diocesan matters including sensitive personnel and diocesan business information;

Education and Experience:
1. A licentiate or doctorate in canon law and a Master’s degree in Theology;
2. Pastoral experience in the Catholic Church environment in various leadership positions.

Other Skills and Abilities:
1. Reading proficiency in Latin is useful; and proficiency in Italian and other foreign languages and cultures are helpful.
